11-Copyright Basics

After reading the sections of this chapter, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of copyright law?
  • What kinds of works are protected by copyright? What is not covered by copyright?
  • What are the six exclusive rights (Author’s Bundle of Rights) granted to the copyright holder? You must seek permission from the copyright holder to use his/her work in these situations. What penalties could occur if you violate one or more of the copyright owner’s exclusive rights?
  • When does copyright apply to a work? Does copyright apply to works found on the Internet?
  • What are some exceptions to copyright that would allow for certain uses of copyrighted material without seeking permission?
  • Why was Creative Commons licensing developed?
