10-Writing Tips

After reading the sections of this chapter, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • How should you choose when to use direct quotes from your sources, and when to paraphrase or summarize?
  • When should you choose to paraphrase instead of summarize? When should you choose to summarize instead of paraphrase?
  • Do you need to cite your sources for each technique (quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing)?
  • What are some common transition phrases to use to help others follow your argument?
  • How do you balance information from sources with your own synthesis?
