Instructions: This assignment consists of 4 questions that are to be answered in a brief essay format. Each question is worth 15 points for a total of 60 points. Answers should be a minimum of 6-8 well thought out and well constructed sentences, demonstrating an understanding of the question/concept presented.
- The text focuses on our need for sleep, particularly over the life span. At your present age, what is your sleep need? Outline the benefits to yourself of adequate sleep. What are the consequences, or potential consequences of sleep deprivation for you?
- REM sleep is associated with the process of dreaming. In your own words, discuss the research findings on the importance of REM sleep. Why might REM deprivation be emotionally healthy for some individuals.
- The meaning of dreams has been studied and theorized across time and cultures. More recent research by Rosalind Cartwright and her colleagues proposes a theory more accepted today. Describe a dream someone might have and give an analysis of the dream based on Cartwright’s theory.
- The text addresses mind or consciousness altering substances and how they work on the brain and CNS. With your personal understanding of our society and culture today, what social/psychological reasons might play a part in substance use and abuse in our country? (1)

Instructions: Prepare an annotated bibliography of 5 references on the following topic: Current scholarly research and writings on why humans sleep.
The annotated bibliography should include 5 references related to the topic chosen from the assigned list. The annotated bibliography should follow APA guidelines for citations and should contain the following:
- Citation according to APA format
- Single spaced
- Summary of theory, important points and/or concept presented in the article chosen
- An evaluation of the article, in your own words, relating the work to what you are studying and speaking to the quality of the article.
To complete the assignment, you will research the topic given, utilizing scholarly sources from the library and/or scholarly on-line sources. You should have a minimum of 5 sources. Each annotation should consist of 2 paragraphs:
- A summary of the article, in your own words (Do not use the article abstract.)
- A discussion of how the material supports, informs, and relates to the topic given.
It will help if you read the material and determine what information the writer gives that advances knowledge in the area, how did the author(s) gather the information, and what was the population studied, and how relevant is the information to what you are studying in class. Please Note: Do not choose material that has complicated medical and research terminology that you do not understand.
An example of an annotated bibliography is attached to this assignment. Annotations should be indented ½ inch so that the authors’ last name is the only part that is completely flush on the left. (1)
