Prompt: The study of the brain has been advanced with the invention of the MRI, the fMRI (functional MRI) and PET scans. Research the area of recent brain discoveries to find information on some of the findings. In your post, share at least 2 of the recent discoveries/findings you found interesting. You should reference your information in the post using APA format. (1)

Instructions: Students should complete their assigned readings and consult the discussion rubric before posting on discussion board for each module.

  • Post your initial question responses by the middle of the week so everyone has a chance to respond to your answers later in the week.
  • You should return throughout the week to review the initial post made by your classmates and to reply meaningfully to at least 2 postings made by other students.
  • You are expected to post to the forum in correct sentence and paragraph format. Remember to check for correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Critical Thinking Assignment 2

This assignment aligns with Learning Outcomes 1, 6, and 7.

Instructions: This assignment consists of 4 questions that are to be answered in a brief essay format. Each question is worth 15 points for a total of 60 points. Answers should be a minimum of 6-8 well thought out and well constructed sentences, demonstrating an understanding of the question/concept presented.

  1. Describe the process of neural transmission of messages and the chemicals involved. Define at least two of the neurotransmitters and what behaviors or processes they are linked to. How might a deficiency in these chemicals be exhibited behaviorally?
  2. Describe the glands involved in the production of hormones and the hormones they secrete. How do hormones work and how are they different from neurotransmitters?
  3. Describe the “fight or flight” process and relate this to an extreme trauma and to every-day stressors. What behaviors might be exhibited by a person facing an extreme trauma? What are some of the behavioral and physical consequences exhibited by humans from every-day stress?
  4. The physicist, Michio Kaku, states that we have learned more about the brain in the last 15 years than in all of history up to that time (Michio Kaku, 1947- ) . Explain why this is true and describe the equipment and the different ways a researcher might study the human brain. (1)

Look Ahead: Annotated Bibliography

This assignment is due in Module 3 . This assignment aligns with Learning Outcomes 1 and 8.

Instructions: Prepare an annotated bibliography of 5 references on the following topic: Current scholarly research and writings on why humans sleep.

The annotated bibliography should include 3 references related to the topic chosen from the assigned list. The annotated bibliography should follow APA guidelines for citations and should contain the following:

  • Citation according to APA format
  • Single spaced
  • Summary of theory, important points and/or concept presented in the article chosen
  • An evaluation of the article, in your own words, relating the work to what you are studying and speaking to the quality of the article.

To complete the assignment, you will research the topic given, utilizing scholarly sources from the library and/or scholarly on-line sources. You should have a minimum of 5 sources. Each annotation should consist of 2 paragraphs:

  • A summary of the article, in your own words (DO NOT use the article abstract)
  • A discussion of how the material supports, informs, and relates to the topic given.

It will help if you read the material and determine what information the writer gives that advances knowledge in the area, how did the author(s) gather the information, and what was the population studied, and how relevant is the information to what you are studying in class. PLEASE NOTE: Do not choose material that has complicated medical and research terminology that you do not understand.

An example of an annotated bibliography is attached to this assignment. Annotations should be indented ½ inch so that the authors’ last name is the only part that is completely flush on the left. (1)
